Often times letters accompany Dasvandh donations, and many letters share positive experiences of tithing, expressing the joy and bounty the person has experienced due to tithing. Conversely, a few letters express dissatisfaction with a return on their tithe, and question the laws of the universe to return that gift ten-fold. Why does one person win the lottery when so many others might need it?

I remember reading a passage many years ago in a wonderful little book, The Game of Life and How to Play It, by Florence Scovill-Shinn, about the preparation required to receive God's bounty. She talked about the obvious things, such as compassion, selflessness, gratitude, faith in the universe, and the joy of service.

These are attitudes that are apparent to most of us, but I have recently become aware of a subtler element in the science of prosperity and giving, and that is our expectations when we give. Do we have an underlying agenda for giving? Do we expect a financial reward in return, or a karmic one? Are we giving out of obligation, guilt, or fear? Giving for the love of giving is the best way - giving without any expectations.

She said it is so important to be conscious of our motivation and aware of any hidden agendas we might have during this process. These expectations run cosmic interference and could block the channels of return. Expectation is always a set-up for disappointment.

The next time you write a check as a gift for anyone or anything, may I suggest that you sit first before your checkbook and scan for the mental virus of expectation. Then envision yourself totally covered, compensated, and confident that God and the Universe will provide and protect you. Zero out your mind and allow the experience of the Infinite mind to wash over you, filling you with security and serenity.
