Conference Highlights: The First Annual 3HO International Kundalini Yoga Teachers Conference

The essence of the Teachers Conference (held at the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe, NM), was networking, marketing and public relations and identity as teachers. Seventy teachers filled the room with excitement and energy for one and a half days. They came to meet with each other and gain strength and inspiration from the ideas they shared; they came to glean marketing tips from a panel of five; they came as founding members of the 3HO International Kundalini Yoga Teachers Association; and they came to listen to the Master of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan, whose question & answer session and lectures on "The Strength of a Teacher" were outstanding in detail and scope.

M.S.S. Gurucharan Singh chaired the meetings, adding pearls of yogic wisdom as is his style, and S.S. Sopurkh Kaur facilitated the group process in which ‘Curriculum Development’ and the ‘Database’ were set forth as priorities for the Association this year. The database of the teachings of Yogi Bhajan is far from complete at present time. There are at least 8,000 lectures which still need to be transcribed and edited! Your Gurudakshina contributions and your participation in transcribing (see "Transcribe!!!" article) will help this goal become a reality so that we can create a way to make the teachings available in curriculum format.

Next year we are planning a five day conference - three days for a one time "Grandfathering" course to certify long time teachers of Kundalini Yoga and two full days for the Teachers Conference. Please mark your calenders for these important events which will take place June 13-17, 1995, in New Mexico.

GURUDAKSHINA

Giving Gurudakshina is an expression of gratitude for our Teacher, for the technology of Kundalini Yoga and the 3HO lifestyle that we have been blessed with, and for the privilege we share of being teachers of Kundalini Yoga. Many teachers have asked how to calculate Gurudakshina (11 % of the gross receipts from Kundalini Yoga Classes, Workshops and Teacher Training Programs). The easiest way is to provide an example:

Monthly Yoga Class Income $500
Gurudakshina (11% of $55) $ 55
Room Rental $100
Advertising $ 45
Teaching Salary $300

For Sikh yoga teachers, who tithe 10% of their earnings to Sikh Dharma through Dasvandh, the Dasvandh contribution on the above example would be 10% of the $300 teaching income, or $30.
