Teach Your Children Well
Teach Your Children Well

Dear Parents,

I write to you in this most auspicious year when many of you will be making the pilgrimage to India to be with your children for the 300th birthday of the Khalsa, and to honor the Tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh.

Reflecting on this momentous occasion, I am asking you to bring a specific aspect of the teachings to your child. Will you bring to your children the spirit of giving to the Infinite? Will you show them the power of tithing and how faith in God and the Cosmos fills a void in life that nothing can touch?

When I was eight years old, I was taught the practice of tithing and serving others. My parents were struggling financially raising four children. Regardless of that, they took the time to canvass neighborhoods and make calls for various causes they were committed to. When doing this, they took me with them, engaged my help, and explained what we were doing and why we were doing it. This is how I learned the power of giving and serving others. I found it exciting, empowering, fulfilling, and very important. At eight years old I felt purposeful.

As my family grew more financially stable and successful, my parents always had enough time and resources to support the things they believed in, and I continued to follow their example.

The impact of giving is that all givers are philanthropists no matter what amount is given. And a philanthropist is a person who funds what they believe in, so that they personally can leave a legacy for future generations.

Teach your children well. Discuss tithing. Let them watch you write your Dasvandh check, igniting the potential of tithing in their lives. Experience the power and blessings of the Infinite with your children. Share and insure our next 300 years!

With all prayers and blessings, humbly,
Atma Kaur Khalsa
