Why Have We Become A Group?
Why Have We Become A Group?
Siri Singh Sahib Yogi Bhajan
Winter Solstice 12/20/94

It's not a question of why we have come here and we have become a group. Spirituality has been practiced by man for the last five thousand years. What is the spirituality we are practicing? Why aren't we so many in numbers? Why are some of us going to get lost? Why will some of us grow? What is our future? That is what I am going to discuss with you. Technically speaking, nobody knew what we were doing when we started in the sixties. And today, though we are called Sikhs and part of the Sikh Dharma, even Sikhs do not know what we are doing. I do not know how many years I have to serve you; so I thought I'll sit down with you and talk. And then I would like you to see for yourself where we are going. It's not my obligation where you are going; I know where time is going. That I know. So many of you were with us, many of you touched the shores, many of you sailed out, many of you remained, many of you will come, many of you will go. There's no limit to it.

What are we doing? What we are doing is a very simple process. When you were born, you were born out of a female and a male. The spermatozoa is zigzag and the egg is oval. So geometrically there are two figures which join together. The zigzag spearing-head arrow of spermatozoa and the oval egg which moves, is not round. So those two figures and faculties create the human life. And you work it out. Look at your life. Either your life is zigzag or it is oval. You can never be straight. Take any path on which you have walked. It will be like this. Everybody has to assess themself and train themself.

Now, we are leaving the Piscean Age, the age of "I want to know," and beginning the Aquarian Age, the age of "I know." That's what our joy of journey is. In this you will be surprised. What are we doing here in America, tying turbans, growing beards, wearing white? After all, what is this? Why not jeans, pants, shirts and shorts. We are different. Pioneers of the age of Aquarius are different, and that's all we are. Our background is Piscean, we don't deny that. And our future is Aquarian, we don't deny that either.

So you have one thing. Out of the birth you get nothing but a figure. You get a human figure, to figure out what it is all about. A figure, human figure; it is called saroop. Saroop is a figure for which you have no contribution, for which you have no choice, for which you have no participation. How tall, short, skinny, fat, beautiful you are, is a matter of judgment. But you do have a figure. It's different than how you maintain it. If you maintain it smartly, actively and righteously, or you don't, that’s your doing.

So fact remains you have a figure and you have to figure it out why you were given this figure. On this figure which was given to you as a gift, for which you have no participation, mind you, you have nothing to offer. You can't buy this figure, you can't sell it. You can't do anything with it. This figure some of you will keep it as a gift, some will keep it as you want to keep it. That is the crossroad. That's the line to be drawn. That is called saroop. What God gave you as a figure, you keep it that as a gift and do not shift it, then you do not create between you and God the rift.

You will find this fact in centuries, all men of God, they look like us. Go centuries old, see the rishis, swamis, yogis, Christian saints, see all of them. They were as, when they reached certain stage of Godhood, they were natural. Because their beauty, they wanted to be beautiful to their God, not to man. Their senses were toward God, not to other person. Their limitation become unlimited and that is called roop. They got that beauty, that glow, that divinity and that saintlyhood. They never acquired a makeup, they never acquired anything, and many times you will be shocked, they were just running around naked and still respected. They won't wear clothes. And people didn't condemn them. They were in that ecstasy, they were in that reality. That's how they started. Because this saroop, this body, this figure is given to you to search it out to experience the anoop. Anoop means the Unknown. All but you is unknown to you. And when you know all you, the unknown shall never be unknown to you, you
will be known. It is a very simple formula.

Twenty-five years ago I came here, I didn't write letter to you, "Come on be my student. I have come, I am a great teacher." Is that true? No. It got known. Things get known. People came, they touched the shores, some drank, nurtured themselves, some walked away, some became angry, some were healthy, some became unhealthy, some ego can take it, some couldn't, some have their personal problems, some were impersonal. Because in this Dharma, in this path of life, you have to call on your impersonal. When you call on your personal self, "Oh, me, I have to come through," then I have to come through with my problem, with my insecurities, my handicaps. But when I call on my impersonal, then I call on my spirit, my infinity. Then I don't call on my divinity, I call on my infinity. When I call my infinity I can come through anything. Then I shall never be handicapped for anything. That's the rule of life. That's how you will enter the age of Aquarius.

You don't have now to learn things, you have to learn within yourself that you are you. And you as a whole, you are a gift of God, therefore you have no rift with God. And all you have to watch, through meditation or through anything, that you don't create between you and God a rift. Forget about teacher! You don't like me? Oh, good. I don't like you either. Who cares? Like me, don't like me, love me or don't love me, hate me or don't hate me. It's a very simple theory. If you love yourself, you'll love everybody, if you don't love yourself, you'll love none. Empty pot cannot quench the thirst of anybody. If you are fulfilled with love, joy and happiness, you can share with everybody. If you don't have that, folks, you can't give it to anybody. And there is one thing very simple. Fear, insecurity and vengeance have nothing to do with God. That's our personal thing. Individual thing. That's why Nanak said nirbhao, nirvair, akaal moorat, ajoonee, sai bhang, gur prasaad. You are the gift of the God, you have the knowledge through the Guru that God gave you this blessing to be. And "to be or not to be" is the question of the age of Piscean, "to be to be" is answer of age of Aquarius. So technically speaking, there's nothing you have to learn accept one thing. That you are you within you around you after you before you and for you. You have to find yourself. Not before the mirror. No. But before your consciousness. There is another mirror which you have, it's not that glass, gauged in the back which can tell you your feature. But it is your consciousness which can tell your facts. In those facts if you see your facets of life, you are going to find yourself. There will be nobody more strong than you, most fortunate than you and lucky than you. In a simple way. You have to qualify yourself.

We have come twenty-five years on this path. 960 million we shall be. It has started. It's not a path of a man or a god. It is path of purity, piety and power of that divinity. It is a self, pure self. I'm not important, you're not important. But within you, your purity is important. In your actions your piety is important. And in your living your self empowerment is important. And for that you have to call on yourself. That's why we do what we do. That is why we are building, what we are building.
