My Parents - A Poem by GuruDarshan Kaur Khalsa
My Parents

Your trust in God,
And in the Naad,
Makes me so inspired.
Waking up and playing gurbani, even though you’re tired.

Each and everyday the lessons you taught,
The struggles we fought,
Seem so far a way, and even though I did not know the pain I put you through
You always knew the right thing to say or do.

I value your judgment and your opinion
I seek your acceptance, even in rebellion.
I cannot believe how lucky I am
That God has dealt me such a prosperous hand:

A king and queen of hearts - they rule,
Teaching me each and every tool.
So that I may lead and plant the seed of Sikh Dharma;
Erasing all my karma.

I plot the way’s that I could repay
The happiness you bring my day -
But to no avail.
How could I ever fail -

When I have your hand to hold?
As the years go by, I grow old
And unsure, but I will not let my fear deter me
From taking that giant leap.
Even though the mountain is steep

And the climb is hard, you’ve showed
Me how to stand my ground
And hold my head so very high
Making my limit to the sky.

The twinkles in your eyes, the caring tilt of your head,
The loving way you use to put me to bed.

Your faces are the ones that come to mind,
When I think of the kind
Of people I’d like to be.

You are my role models, you see.
Your discipline is the gift you gave me
So that I could understand what it means to live my grace
And a challenge I must sometimes face.

Once in awhile I fall in a pit
And you tell me to show my grit,
To bow my head and close my eyes,
Making my will power arise.

You’ve raised me in a world that is
Full of maya and mischief,
So I know that it must be a struggle,
Raising a child in such a chaotic jungle.

But you’ve surpassed every twist and turn;
A gold medal you should earn
For running such a tiring race,
Always knowing how to stand your place.

We’ve taught each other how to cope
With the hardships of love
And how to put ourselves above all temptation,
And live as God’s beautiful creation.

Thank you for your strength, thank you for your spirit.
I want to say thank you, so loud-everyone will hear it,
So that everyone will know, and everyone will see
Just how much you mean to me.
